Every year, nearly a hundred mentors give their time, energy, and talent to make a difference in the lives of students at Computers4Kids (C4K). Mentors become role models, friends, teachers, and cheerleaders for our students. If you ask them, most C4K mentors will say that one hour a week is not much time to give, but their dedication is obvious as they make the commitment to see their students through the full nine months required for students to graduate from C4K's program. It is a time period that makes it possible for C4K students and mentors to really get to know each other, to discover new skills, and experience a great sense of accomplishment as they work together to design, implement, and evaluate their creative technology projects.
In addition to mentoring, C4K volunteer opportunities include refurbishing donated computers, and leading workshops on specific technology skills. If you would like to take advantage of any of these opportunities, please fill out an online application.
After receiving your application, a C4K staff member will contact you to further discuss your volunteering interests. All C4K volunteers who work directly with students are required to complete a free background check (done at C4K).

Goal
Your purpose as a C4K Mentor is to teach valuable skills, set a positive example, and be a friend.
Duties
After attending a Mentor Orientation session, you will be matched with one of our students. Students are in middle or high school. You will meet with your student once per week to work on projects that you decide upon together. You may also choose to attend special C4K-sponsored events for mentors and/or students such as workshops on different software programs.
Qualifications
You need not be a programmer or Web designer to be a C4K Mentor. If you are comfortable using the Internet and Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and can navigate around a Windows or Mac computer, you can teach a student a great deal. Your positive attitude and interest in learning new things will be your keys to success as a mentor.
Time Required
Mentor Orientation: 2 hours
Meetings with student: One hour per week for 36 hours for community members or one and a half hours per week for one academic year (for UVA students who leave for the summer). |
Place
Computers4Kids Learning Lab: 945 Second Street SE (off Elliott Avenue), 22902
Benefits
As a C4K Mentor, you will benefit greatly from having a part in bringing positive, permanent change to a young life in your community. You can feel good knowing that the skills that your student learns through you will give him or her tools for future success. And you will have the opportunity to learn new skills as well.

If you are comfortable with computer hardware, and building and fixing computers, refurbishing may be the thing for you. Refurbishers prepare all donated computers for distribution to students and provide maintenance and repairs for students' home computers.
We ask refurbishers to commit to at least four hours of volunteer time a month. The refurbishing lab is generally open Monday through Friday between 10am and 7:30pm.
After we receive your application we will contact you to schedule a one-hour orientation session. |

C4K schedules special workshops for students (i.e. training on using Powerpoint, Photoshop, etc.) Volunteers can lead a workshop previously designed by C4K staff, or design and lead a workshop of their own. We welcome your creative input, and the workshop times can be scheduled based on your availability. Workshops are usually 1-2 hours in length and typically attendance is anywhere from five to twelve students and/or mentors.
