Charlottesville Ten Miler Race Invests $62K in Youth Mentoring

Wow, what an amazing week! We received a donation of $62,000 from the Charlottesville Ten Miler race!

Check out our coverage on CBS 19 and NBC 29!

On August 1, we hosted a check-giving ceremony for the Charlottesville Ten Miler, where we had snacks, original music, and community guests. The race, in its 42nd year, occurred on March 23, 2019, and had over 2,000 participants. The donated funds were made up of race fees and community donations.

The donated funds will be used to expand mentoring and experiential learning opportunities for local youth at C4K to engage with industry-level technology.

We were also on TV! Representatives from CBS19 News and NBC29 were present to interview C4K staff and members after the ceremony. When asked by CBS19 News about the donated funds, Kala Somerville, Executive Director at C4K, was excited about the variety of possibilities:

This investment from the Charlottesville Ten Miler will make a huge difference! We are excited to continue to provide meaningful one-to-one and group mentoring, field trips to local tech businesses, training for youth and mentors, and opportunities for young people to speak at national conferences.

– Kala Somerville, C4K Executive Director

C4K member Justin said that he was also looking forward to the possible opportunities this donation might offer fellow C4K members, especially those who are interested in game design:

My personal future goal is to become a video game programmer, and C4K really assists me with having to do that. They matched me up with a professional mentor that’s good at programming, and I’m currently working on a video game right now.

The secondary beneficiaries of the Charlottesville Ten Miler also received a donation at the ceremony – congratulations to The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Charlottesville, Girl Scouts of the Virginia Skyline Troop 944, and the Running Club at UVA.

Thank you to the Charlottesville Ten Miler and everyone else who came out to celebrate!
